Several surveys conducted by public interest research and advocacy, as represented by the respondents of the surveys, have given money, things or energies. The amount of giving is certainly influenced by the financial condition in the country.
The average amount of giving to individuals is high, i,e. in 2000 it reaches Rp. 386,800 (money) but in 2004 it escalates twice as much to Rp. 884, 983 (money and things combined). It is interesting to know that in difficult times such as natural disasters or financial crisis the rate of giving is even higher. The more fortunate ones are are encouraged do give more to the less fortunate ones.
Ten years ago 98% of respondents reported that they had given whereas now nearly all respondents (99.8%) say that they have given. In addition the 2004 survey reveals that the amount of money given to individuals increases from Rp. 884,985/person/year to Rp.926.750/person/year. The rise is also in the average amount of giving to non-religious activities/organizations, from Rp. 301.515/year/person to Rp. 325.775/person/year; nevertheless, the averageamount of giving to religious activities/organizations slightly decreases, from Rp. 483.241/person/year to Rp. 334.850/person/year.
Another interesting development is that there is an incrase in the number of people who give. In the 2000 survey it is revealed that about 16.6% of respondents putting aside some money to be given and in the 2004 survey the percentage slightly decreases, i,e. 16.3%; nevertheless, in the 2007 survey the percentage significantly rises, 1.e. 43.7% although the average amount of money put aside for giving decreases slightly, i.e from Rp. 787,671 in 2004 to Rp. 767.272 in 2007.
